1 Star Technique but no cookie
As someone who has spent over a decade on the Internet, I understand the fundamentals of the building of a tool or the utilization of a tool that can be used to generate money online. If you understand this too, then skip this one.
This book is for the complete novice. BUT if that novice buys it, they will regret it because they will spend hours and hours toiling to get to an expert level of understanding on how to build and utilize a system such as this and then be faced with the same outcome I was.
There is absolutely no recommendation for products and services that do well in this environment. All of the check copies posted in the book were dated from 2005 which most folks know was the hay-day of the search marketplace and literally was the first year in existence for the pay-per-click marketplace. Today’s marketplace, especially in the affiliate realm, is extremely more competitive largely because of books like this. There was no effort expended in addressing this competitive pressure and the resulting gap reduction between affiliate commission and PPC bids.
At the end of the day, folks, there are no easy millions. You must be ahead of a trend like Mr. Borelli, to exploit such an opportunity. Once the rest of the world has caught up, the only thing you can hope to do is … you guessed it … sell a book to teach others how to do it.
4 Stars Direct and Immediately Useful
I was seeking a detailed, practical and thorough “how-to” approach to build internet-based revenue. This book filled the bill. It covered all key facets of the approach – particularly helpful for a layperson – as well as for someone with web-based experience (as am I). I have yet to test the specific recommendations. The book was solid.
1 Star Didn’t work for me
I tried the principles in this book. I set up some ads for a variety of products and different companies through Commission Junction and was, at first, delighted that I was getting a good amount of clicks. I was confident the ads were good enough because of some experience I’ve had in the past writing copy.
However, after over 250 clicks to major websites that boasted a large earnings per click, I got one sale and a large $ loss. The ads were good enough to catch the people’s attention, but no one was buying.
I think this is a tough way to go at it. A website might be the better way to go. I am amazed that anyone could make any money doing this, never mind millions.
2 Stars Basic start but could leave you broke..
Its true that money can be made by signing up for affiliate programs and marketing them on pay per click search engines. However, its possible to lose a great deal of money and this book doesn’t do a good enough job helping people calculate the risks. For example, the author indicates he markets Amazon products. Amazon on its basic associate program pays 4%. A $20.00 book pays a comission of .80 cents. But in pay per click advertising a marketer can pay 30, 40 cents and even a dollar depending on the keywords. In a test marketing the new Harry Potter book (book 5) I spent over 9.00 in ppc ads that resulted in 4 sales. The click thru to sale was 13%… which isn’t bad. The point is, I earned only about $2, but spent over $9.00 to earn it (a loss of $7.00). The author doesn’t explain how to choose affiliate programs in terms of cost vs. payoff. Anyone who reads this book will get some basic information, but before spending money on ppc advertising they’d be better off buying The Ultimate Guide to Google Adwords which does a better job explaining keywords, writing effective ads and managing campaigns.
4 Stars Basic tools for the online gold rush
My experience was similar to that of “gordo the lordo.” Plenty of clicks but just a few orders. Getting clicks isn’t hard. What kind of clicks? That’s the $1,000,000 question.
As a search engine advertiser, your task is to capture the clicks of consumers who have made a buying decision or are very close. These clicks will make money for you. The clicks of people who are “just browsing” will cost you money. You have to be a student of online search behavior.
You capture money-making clicks by finding highly relevant keywords and writing focused ads. How hard can it be? Get your ads up and running, tweak them, and watch the money roll in. You only need basic English skills and common sense. A degree in advertising or English is not going to help.
I would encourage anyone to try it because you may discover that you have the knack. By spending $500 or so, you should be able to get an idea how well you might do. Don’t make the mistake I made, which was to let my ads capture several hundred clicks without getting any orders. I kept thinking “the orders will kick in.” They didn’t. Stop your ads after 200-300 clicks and wait for results. (Even 50 clicks are too many with retail sites.) You can either tweak the ad (if it’s close to break-even) or abandon it and try something else. Tweaking wouldn’t have helped my ads, which earned pennies for every dollar spent on clicks.
You are playing the keyword market on Google. Some keywords sell for $20 per click and more. Search engine advertisers don’t get caught up in keyword “bubbles.” They are only after potent “value” keywords that sell for 25 cents or less.
The keyword market is like a gold rush. Everywhere you look the ground is torn up by hordes of stampeding prospectors. You wander far and wide hoping to find a stone that hasn’t been turned. How many thousands of other guys are out there trying the same thing? Good luck.
You never know. You might have the knack. Affiliate Millions gives you everything you need to know to get started. When I joined my first affiliate program and set up my first ads, I had the book open and followed it not step-by-step but word-for-word. It’s just the kind of “excruciating” detail a beginner needs.
Mr. Borelli explains how to evaluate the earnings potential of an affiliate program. The profit, or course, depends on your revenue per click. An adgroup for $20 books may not be the way to go.
Should you actually make money, there is a chapter on campaign finance. You have to manage your cash flow to optimize performance. If another book on online advertising has this kind of chapter, I haven’t seen it.
Mr. Borelli has set up the Affiliate Millions website for “prospectors.” The only item listed for sale is the book. There is a free monthly newsletter. There are no ads. Mr. Borelli answers questions on the site’s discussion board. If you are at all familiar with the “get rich online” racket you know how exceptional this is. Such sites are usually crammed with ads and have little useful information.
Mr. Borelli’s advice is a bit sketchy and vague. That’s because it has to be. If Mr. Borelli were to disclose his winning formula, everyone would copy him and he would be out of business within hours. All he can do is point people in right direction. Within that proviso, he provides clear and valuable information.
Mr. Borelli makes no promises that prospectors will get rich. He merely suggests that it is possible. He ends the opening chapter with “Take it step-by-step and read the chapters that follow, and you’ll stand a good chance of becoming an Affiliate Millionaire yourself.” If he starts the book by saying your chances are practically nil, no one will continue reading.
Like “gordo,” I’m amazed that anyone could make millions at this. A million dollars in a year is $2,700 a day. You would have to consider yourself pretty successful with $2,700 a day in SALES, never mind commissions. You would have to strike it rich with multiple million-dollar campaigns. You would have to come up with new ones all the time.
Think of the millions in revenue Mr. Borelli is generating for the companies he advertises for. They should throw a party for him.

5 Stars A wonderful primer on starting a business with contact information for locating startup funds if necessary.
This is a valuable book (resource) for budding entrepreneurs. It seems to try to cover all the bases for starting a small business, but it can’t do them all well in the space available between its covers. The book is only 288 pages long. If you are in the planning stages of starting a small business, then I highly recommend you get a copy of this book. Read it, study it, and outline it. There are helpful checklists to help you grasp the subjects. You will come up with a plethora of keywords and terms that you will want to google to find Web pages giving more detailed (and maybe more current) information.
I am a SCORE counselor (Senior Corps of Retired Executives) who typically does face-to-face counseling sessions three nights a month. It would really be neat if my clients would read this book BEFORE they came to their session with me because they would pretty much be “educated customers” ready to ask educated questions. Our sessions would be so much more beneficial.
My favorite chapters were:
1. Initial business concerns
2. Your business’ structure
3. Business start-up details
5. Sources of business assistance (SCORE is mentioned here)
7. Your smart business plan (and a good sample plan is included)
8. Obtaining the financing you need
The book is weak when it comes to how the Internet can be used in corresponding, hiring, and marketing. But this is just one example of how googling keywords and concepts found in the book will make the book more complete. Don’t treat the book as authoritative on the law. It isn’t. Nor was it ever intended to be. It is light on tax information as it relates to small business.
I was particularly impressed with the material presented in Chapter 2: Choice of Legal Entity. That subject is sorely ignored in most small business books, and it is critically important. It is a subject I regularly must spend a great deal of time discussing at my SCORE sessions. This book does a pretty good job on the topic.
Chapters 4 and 9 through 12 are easy to find fault with. The topic of each could fill a book. But having these topics covered definitely will help a budding entrepreneur know some of the issues they raise.
I would have liked the book more if Chapter 6 (marketing) had been less superficial. When I read it I got the impression that the author was more a public relations expert than a marketing expert. I generally categorize public relations as a subset of marketing. Marketing includes advertising, public relations, and a whole host of other promotion techniques. I did not get this message when I read the book. I also would have liked the book better if the Internet, email, and Web sites had been discussed more. But there are many books on those subjects. Therefore, I can’t complain too much about the limited discussion of computers.
When you read this book it may feel a little like it was produced on an assembly line. Maybe it was? There are 50 versions of this book sold; the only state I haven’t found a copy for is Montana. Content is king, and this book has it. 5 stars!
2 Stars Lightweight: maybe a good overview, but missing details
How to Start a Business in Texas includes chapters on initial business considerations, business structure, licensing/permits/taxes, employer responsibilities, sources of business assistance, marketing, business plan, obtaining financing, finance & accounting, human resources management, insurance, setting up your office, and info on Texas. In most cases the info was Texas specific but at times it was not (e.g. “Many states have repealed their bulk sales law … consult your secretary of state or attorney.”) The chapter on business structures was 18 pages. It was pretty light on tax information and did not include any sample forms for incorporating, nor did it include a sample operating agreement for an LLC. I also thought the tax information for an LLC was confusing. The summary states that the profits and losses pass through the LLC to the owners for tax purposes. Later the author states, (paraphrasing) Even though the IRS has ruled the LLC will qualify as a partnership for tax purposes, Congress has yet to pass any legislation to that effect. A 1997 IRS decision allows sole proprietorships to convert to LLC status. “This “check-the-box” legislation allows LLC’s to be treated as corporations or partnerships for tax purposes.” The chapter on setting up your office failed to provide any information on tax deductions. The marketing chapter has one paragraph on using the internet to market your business, so don’t expect anything useful on setting up a web site. The chapter on insurance doesn’t discuss errors and omissions insurance and basically states that a discussion of liability insurance is either beyond the scope of this book or you should consult your insurance agent. The chapter on accounting and finance is very lightweight.

4 Stars Everything you Need to Know…
Haven’t we all had dreams of working from home in our pajamas, being our own boss, with no one to answer to but ourselves? Dreams like these can become reality, according to Beth Williams. She is the author of How to Open & Operate a Financially Successful Web-Based Business; a guide that can get you on the fast track to launching a website for your already-established company or guide you through the processes of parlaying your business idea into a marketable force on the internet.
With a significant rise in internet-based sales each year, businesses have recognized the importance of having a website for their merchandise. Williams details the brief history of web-based businesses, and explains how the upcoming “dot com boom” will learn from the past mistakes made during the first boom in the early nineties. She asks readers insightful questions about their web-based business intentions, which requires anyone reading the guide to be honest about their intentions. Are you serious about establishing a successful business, or are you having fanciful thoughts of never having to wear your business attire, or tolerate the daily grind of commuter traffic? After making it through Beth Williams’s question and answer session, readers will know where their true intent lies.
In no way does Williams lead us to believe that this guide is a magical link to web-based business success; she continuously reminds us that this endeavor will require much forethought and perseverance. Just because you may have the desire to own and operate an internet based business, certainly doesn’t mean you have the tools you need for it to be successful. This 290 page guide illustrates that there are MANY steps and concrete planning that must take place before establishing yourself in the web-based business world. Williams discusses how to find your “niche”, and gives practical advice on how to determine if there is a legitimate market for your idea.
This guide is a stellar handbook for anyone looking to initiate a web-based business, because Williams covers every aspect of launching and running a site. If you are not computer savvy, Williams offers suggestions and explains how to find a professional web designer, and how to use templates to create web pages. With the right idea, anyone can have a profitable website…even those who have basic computer skills. Exceptional and creative ideas are also offered by the author to enhance your webpage once it has been established; ideas that are insightful and easy to implement.
This book achieves a rating of four out of five stars, and should be considered a vital guide for any entrepreneur wanting to expand their business or ideas onto the internet.
4 Stars Insightful, well thought out, easy read
Beth Williams `How to Open and Operate a Financially Successful Web-based Business’ is an insightful compilation of ideas and plans of action for anyone who wants to put their business online. This book is chocked full of useful information such as creating a winning business plan to doing your own advertising. All this and more is located in this one comprehensive book. This book is detailed, well thought out and easy to read. Williams’s poses hard reality based questions asking the reader why they are starting their business and how to take an existing business online. Everything is right here from start to finish in this systematic book.
Williams will guide you through creating your own website, using search engine strategies, how to find products and so much more. By displaying the advantages and disadvantages to having a web-based business, the author gives the reader lots of food for thought. There are no get rich quick schemes here. It is all reality based and laden with facts and evidence of success. Williams gives numerous examples throughout the book on how to ensure profits and stability, finding your niche and how to flaunt it. She continuously points out that with hard work, a bit of money, time and perseverance and you too can succeed in your own web-based business.
For anyone who is starting a web-based business or just thinking of it this book is one you need to add to your business library.
5 Stars Takes You Step by Step
Usually when I think of a web based business I immediately think of get rich quick schemes, at home data entry scams and other frauds. However the author realizes that I’m not alone in my first reaction. Ms. Williams starts off making sure the reader knows that she isn’t about to give out any secrets to getting rich instantly. Instead of get rich stories the reader is given the opposite and reminded of the dot com boom and crash not so long ago.
The reader is encouraged to treat their web based business like any other business. Once the reader is given a reality check the author takes their hand and guides them how to start their business. She helps the reader decide on their niche to narrow down business ideas and explains how to write a business plan.
The reader really gets a step by step explanation, and therefore it is a really good book for someone who knows absolutely nothing about the business process. Those who are well versed in setting up a business or who already have a small business but want to go online, would find this book less helpful. So the book isn’t for everyone. As I was reading I was glad to be mothered by the author, as she held my hand explaining everything. But if I knew anything about business then I probably would not appreciate mother as much. However, if one wants someone to hold their hand through the entire process of setting up their business then this definitely the right book.
5 Stars A great guide to lease option
Today’s business environment has created a “self-employed” workforce – no matter if you work for yourself or for someone else. With corporate layoffs (and the global downsizing of the workforce in general), it is important for all of us to understand the individual repercussions the consequences of this change have on our work and career.
So what are the options? One option is presented in the timely book, How to Open & Operate a Financially Successful Web-Based Business. This book provides the ABC’s of how to market, develop, and design your website to assist in realizing a rewarding and lucrative business. It also comes with a companion CD-ROM.
Williams provides timely, real-world examples of the successes and failures of web-based businesses. Though there is a universe of opportunity, there is also a wide margin for failure. Williams walks though the warning signs of potential issues with web-based businesses and provides preventative measures to avoid these pitfalls. Williams also provides a skeletal foundation that will assist in developing a successful online product or service. An added bonus: the publisher is donating a portion of their profits to the Humane Society, on behalf of the passing of their beloved office canine, Bear.
5 Stars Great Guide to Use for Web-Based Business
How to Open & Operate a Financially Successful Web-Based Business by Beth Williams paints an honest picture of exactly what you need to do to start your own web-based business. There’s a lot more to it than just sticking some products up on a web site and hoping they sell.
This book provides you with all the steps you need to follow, things you need to consider, advantages and disadvantages of a web-based business, resources and where to find them, and probably just important things you shouldn’t do. Reading it almost makes me what to start my own web-based business. The knowledge to do so is included in this book with all the resources included. Various helpful web sites such as web sites for payment options, Better Business Bureau, and drop shippers, are listed throughout the book and compiled conveniently at the end.
This book is definitely a must-read for anyone who is considering starting a web-based business. The author details all of the many things to consider when embarking on this adventure that I would have never thought of until I read this book.

User Ratings and Reviews
4 Stars Very informative on questions about Franchising
Very informative and interesting on the Franchising Business
5 Stars simply fantastic……
As prospective franchise purchasers, my wife and I highly recommend this book. It is well balanced, presenting the path from initial consideration, analyzing the data including the daunting UFOC, and a list of resources that are helpful. It is not biased towards the viewpoints of franchisers, which is one of the downfalls of the Dave Thomas book which is otherwise a good companion to this text.
It is simultaneously a good and quick read, but is also full of information. I hope that anyone interested in the franchise route will read this and learn from it.
5 Stars Tips and Traps When buying a Franchise is a Must Read!
The ABC’s of franchising are all in Mary Tomzack’s book Tips and Traps When Buying a Franchise. Clearly covered and simply explained are everything you want to and need to know about franchising. This book should be a must read for business majors and anyone interested in franchising. This book is worth the price of the book.
5 Stars Much better than the other books on franchising
I found this book very informative on the subject of franchising. It gives you a great deal of information to consider and look for. As for the questions it raises I went to the authors website and that helped somewhat but I still had questions that I needed to get answered so I found and expert to help me.
A little investigation, and Google, led me to George Knauf. I wanted to use everything available to me and the book was a good start, but don’t dicsount the benefit of some good and experienced advice. The book was worth the investment and the advice was somehow free, how can you beat that?
5 Stars AMAZING!
I started off with no knowledge of the franchising industry..until this book. Tips and Traps takes you through the whole franchise process. After devouring this book ( I am already on my fourth reading!), I have become a franchisee in an expanding food franchise! I would like to find Mary E Tomazack and shake her hand…she changed my life!

Information Trapping Real Time Research on the Web
Information Trapping Real Time Research on the Web

How many times have you run a Google search that resulted in thousands of results? With over 8 billion pages online and more posted every day, the Web more than likely contains the information you’re looking for — if only you could find it. In Information Trapping: Real-Time Research on the Web, Internet-search-engine expert Tara Calishain makes researching more efficient and rewarding for anyone for whom the Web is an indispensable tool — academics, journalists, scientists, and professionals, as well as bloggers, genealogists, and hobbyists. She does so by teaching the latest techniques for building automated information-gathering systems. As an alternative to the typical one-time search for information, Tara demonstrates how readers can use RSS feeds, page monitoring tools, and other software to set up information streams of many different data types — from text to multimedia to conversations — for capture and review.

4 Stars Very helpful for market research
There is something for the beginner through to the advanced researcher in this book. Some of it will get dated fairly quickly as the web evolves almost faster than a book can be written. Her syntactical search tips for all the major tools are very valuable. I had never tried the intitle:keyword syntax prior to this, nor had I used cluster search tools, very cool. Lots of tips on how and where to see who is linking to your content plus where your content may be landing (without your permission!). A good working book, if you try out 1/3 of her suggestions your web searching capabilities will grow substantially. Very helpful for market researchers. She is quite prolific in this area.
4 Stars A very good informative book
I found this book quite useful. I was already using RSS readers and all sorts of life hacks to make my life more efficient. When I came across this book, I thought it might be just what I was looking for to expose me to a whole new set of tools.
That’s exactly what it did. Some tools were better than others, and some tools weren’t really that good, but at least I know them. I am quite glad I bought it. Now I know a lot more about automatic trapping of information. With all the explosion of information, there is certainly a need for more automatic capture of knowledge. Highly recommended.
5 Stars Information Trapping ROCKS!
This is a fantastic book. It is written clearly, and even though I run an Internet website, I have learned much.
Tara really knows her stuff. I would not hesitate to buy this book as it is possible the publisher will one do one printing. If that happens, you may have a tough time getting a copy.
4 Stars She almost hit a home run with me but the ending was a triple
I was so impressed with the book. Tara’s writing style is easy and user friendly. She gave a lot of great information. Sometimes overwhelming information but it was organized in a easy to read format. You could keep up with the information. I kept thinking , I hope she give us a lot of examples at the end on how I can become an information trapper.
She gave one example of someone looking for external information and one example of someone looking for internal information. One example! (320 pages of information, on acquiring tons of information and one example how you can use it.) I will take it, most writers are too lazy to even give you one example.
But she could have hit a home run with me giving me several examples of how you could become a basic, intermediate and advance information trapper and given us several case studies to tie it up.
At very least, give us an example of what she is doing. She talks about trapping information on autism. Then, give us an example of how she,an advance professional, uses all of the resources to trap information.
How does a professional does it.
And I had hope, that perhaps by registering my book on the website, she will give gives us case studies there.. If a person wanted to trap the subject of ovarian cancer , give us an example what she does. Remember, we are newbie, we have never done this before.
She has a website and a company , called ResearchBuzz and this is what Tara does for a living. I wish she would have spend a lot of time wrapping things up and give us plenty of examples how this is done.
I do recommend the book. Its an amazing book and I did learn many new things. A better ending will have been the frosting on the cake and a walk off home run. And a rating of 5!

5 Stars I learned so much from this book
This book took my business, AUDIN Web Design, to new heights. Now anyone can just type in AUDIN Web Design in Google (or Yahoo and MSN, for that matter) and find me. This book allowed me to master Google, the juggernaut of search engines. If you cannot tame that tiger, you will not survive in the market place. My company, AUDIN Web Design, has helped many small business get ranked on Google. This is my bible. I carry it around wherever I go. I advise everyone to read this book before consulting a professional about your online search needs. You could get ripped off if you are not wise about your choice of Company. This book has given me such confidence with the Google juggernaut, that my company now offers a 100% money back guarantee policy. A lot of companies can’t offer that because they don’t know what they are doing. Read this book and get informed. It could save you lots of money, yes money, the stuff you work so hard for. The stuff makes the world go round.
5 Stars Solid Overview of AdSense, AdWords, Froogle and Catalogs
“Building Your Business with Google For Dummies” by Brad Hill is one of many options for learning Google’s tools. This one is focused on using it to promote business websites.
You might not need this book. To find out, go to Google’s website, and create an account. Look at the FAQs, testimonials and the help areas. Much of what’s in Hill’s book is logical, but is organized in as sensibly as any I have seen. I need this book for that reason. It saved me time from having to learn this information in a too slow trial-and-error way.
You’ll learn a few important things about Google, and how to help them help you attract traffic, sell products, or create interest in your website.
AdWords
I have an online e-commerce site, and need to know Google. As a smaller business, I can’t compete with the major companies in being listed in categories I feel are important. That’s where Google AdWords comes in. It allows me, for a fee per click, to compete.
Hill’s explanation of strategies and process is solid. There are ways to lose money, and he helps show how to test keywords, use ad groups, edit ads, and how to bid intelligently. He also looks at the premium service that allows big businesses to use oogle with less worry about click-through rates.
AdSense
AdSense, the tool that places Google ads on websites based on the page’s content. While I only make a few cents when a vistor clicks through an ad, it helps me provide a service to my customers who do not feel my site met their needs.
Hill explains how AdSense makes money, and warns against cheating.
Increasing Your Page Rank
No one knows Google’s formula for ranking pages. The most important factor is having useful information, being linked on other like-minded sites, not abusing the process.
Hill tells you what page rank means, and how to avoid mistakes many webmasters make. This includes tips on design, domain choice, keyword use.
Using Froogle and Google Catalogs
These are two features I have never used. Hill gives a good overview of this Google tool, which provides exposure to those websites selling products in a catalog-style, or through AOL and Yahoo shops.
I fully recommend “Building Your Business with Google For Dummies” by Brad Hill.

5 Stars A must read for any business owner.
Since Google is currently master of the universe you need to understand what Google is looking for when it ranks web pages. This book not only does that but goes into detail of other Google services like froogle, adsense and adwords. I highly recommend this book to anybody trying to build a presence on the web.
5 Stars Gotta Be Google
At the moment the only real game worth playing is Google. No, I’m not a spokesperson for them but it is clear that if you’re going to play you ought to play with the guys that own the ball. There is power in “Building Your Business with Google for Dummies”. The best thing is that when you meet the Google criteria and succeed with them you can use the exact same business building blocks with any other resource. Brad Hill understands this and does a great job relaying his knowledge via the “Dummies” format. I’m beginning my second read-through. Thanks Brad.
